Band Camp FAQ

Hey, Scott Band.  I hope that you've been having a great summer so far!  This year's first official "band camp" email will be the FAQ that went out to WMS students towards the end of last year.  Here it is, in its entirety:

Hey all!  As your student transitions into High School, I would like to make sure you have the necessary information to get the most of your child’s exposure to the arts!  We’re going to start by handing you some key information about the first thing that your student could potentially become a part of: the Scott Marching Band!  I’ve made this into a type of FAQ and will follow it up with more information as band camp draws nearer and nearer.

What is Marching Band like at Scott High School?
In two words: fun AND challenging.  We work hard at putting our annual productions on the football field and have a great time doing it.  We also use our time together to bond and become a family, ensuring that your student starts school at Scott with a family of 80 (now 90, btw) behind them.  We’re looking to grow closer before our annual band camps start by working at Reds games and holding a car wash or two over the Summer.  Speaking of camp, we do have 2 weeks of it, followed by 1 practice a week.  We’re also exploring 2 “gives back” opportunities that will have Scott Marching Band helping our surrounding community.

Camp?  Ok, got it.  So when is that?  Do I have to come to be in marching band?
Our camp this year is: July 25-29, from 12-3 and then August 1-5, from 12-9.  Percussion and Color Guard Camp happen during the first week, from 4-8.  And yes, kiddos, you have to be there to "be there".  Every concept we learn is the foundation for the next...if you miss the foundation, things get very difficult and sometimes impossible.  To achieve at the expectations we've given ourselves and those given to us by our staff and director...we have to be willing to commit.

You said that you guys do an annual production.  What’s this year’s?
Our show is called "Catching Firebird" which combines The Hunger Games and Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite.  We’re really taking it up a level this year, both musically and visually.  (Seriously, I've been arranging the first minute of the show and even I'm excited about this show!)

I’d love to, but my student’s schedule is already full.  Do they have to be in band class?
Not at all.  Marching Band is also 100% extra-curricular.  No band class needed.  Band class deals exclusively with concert band material.  We often have a lot of our marching members see what band is like here through the marching program and then switch in during 2nd and 3rd trimester.  It’s a great way to see if band is something that your child would like to continue to pursue throughout high school.

Where can I find some more information?
From here, you can see our Twitter, Google calendar, and recent posts concerning what we’re up to currently.  We’re about to post testimonials from current band students concerning what the program does for them and could potentially do for your child!

We’re interested.  How do we ensure that we stay “in the loop”?
From here, you can enter info in an "Intent to March" Google form that populates a spreadsheet that allows us to contact you from this point onward.  This is a no-obligation form.  It more lets us send you important information on things like camp, cost, and needed forms. (We've had 90 people sign up for this to this point...June 6).  A big info blast is about to go out through these channels.
